Tokyo at sunrise 🇯🇵

I had trouble sleeping throughout my second stay in Japan. When I could not get back to sleep after five one Saturday morning, I decided to go out and see what Tokyo looked like at sunrise. Perhaps I would find Sensō-ji completely empty, without the crowds of tourists.

And so, at six in the morning, I left the hotel and headed for Asakusa. The streets on the way to the station were almost empty.

I saw only a handful of people, and at times I felt as though I were alone in the whole of Tokyo.

Empty streets before sunrise

Some passengers on the train were asleep, which is quite common in Japan early in the morning. I was a little envious of them.

Sleeping on the train

When I reached Sensō-ji, there was indeed almost nobody there. Just a few tourists who, perhaps like me, had been unable to sleep.

I captured the sunrise between the temple and Tokyo Skytree.

On the way to Sumida River Park, I passed several early-morning runners.

A group of elderly people were already exercising in the park, perhaps as they do together every morning.

Although I struggled with sleep throughout my stay in Japan, on this occasion it gave me an unforgettable experience. Tokyo at sunrise was completely different from the city during the day: peaceful and empty.
